Post harvest

Postharvest is the period following harvest of fresh fruit and vegetables and growing or cutting of ornamental crops. For constant marketing and long distance shipments fresh produce must be stored for weeks or months prior to marketing. Postharvest handling includes handling, storage, cleaning, sorting, packaging and transport of fresh produce. Once fresh produce are detached from the mother plant, deterioration processes begin which can lead to loss of visual, sensory and nutritional quality or generation of unsalable products.

Research on postharvest is focused on:

  • Development of technologies to prolong shelf life and sustainability of fresh produce
  • Impact of technologies on maintaining product freshness and sensory and chemical quality
  • Integrating postharvest quality changes with preharvest factors
